Interview_With_A_Vampire_Writing_Response_

Situation and character of the vampire are used to outline the importance of relationships in “Interview With A Vampire” in many ways. When we look at Louis, he lived in agony as a vampire as he had to separate from his family who considered him dead from the fire in their house. He loved them so much he had to let them go as he could not let them know he was a vampire. Louis was not accustomed to being a vampire and did not want to get accustomed to the vampire lifestyle. He was not very comfortable with the idea of being a vampire and did not live amongst the others of his kind well. Louis’s human nature allowed him to feed off of animals which was seen as a weakness to the other vampires but Louis did not care as he still had a heart. Chapter 5 of Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, stood apart from the chapters before it. This chapter stands out to me because up until this point we are gaining a greater understanding of who the main character is. What is it that they are interested in? What is their personality type? How are they feeling when creating the monster? A particularly prominent example of Gothicism reveals itself as the chapter opens and the scene and mood is described. The words “dreary”, “anxiety”, and “agony” are used in the first two sentences introducing the scene to the audience. Gothicism is describing strange and/or frightening events that take place in mysterious places and that is very prominent in this reading. “It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out” As we read this information we can visualize the dark setting that this mysteriousness was taking place in.
