Frankenstein_Assignment_Reading_Response_01
Chapter 5 of Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, stood apart from
the chapters before it. This chapter stands out to me because up until this
point we are gaining a greater understanding of who the main character is. What
is it that they are interested in? What is their personality type? How are they
feeling when creating the monster? A particularly prominent example of Gothicism
reveals itself as the chapter opens and the scene and mood is described. The
words “dreary”, “anxiety”, and “agony” are used in the first two sentences introducing
the scene to the audience. Gothicism is describing strange and/or frightening
events that take place in mysterious places and that is very prominent in this
reading. “It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against
the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out” As we read this information we
can visualize the dark setting that this mysteriousness was taking place in.
The candle is a small form of light but slowly dying to set the anticipating
mood of the scene. The fact that all the monster’s limbs were hand picked and
described as beautiful, almost as if it is a gruesome work of art. The
mentioning of yellow ill appearing skin and black hair sets a picture in the readers’
mind that this is not a natural creation of life but a creation of death. The
author speaks of depriving themselves of rest and health to put all effort and energy
into the creation of the monster. This speaks to us regarding the creator's
current state and the outcome of what he is making with such little natural
energy in his life. This is a beautiful example of Gothicism when the mood and
setting are described to the reader. We ourselves can capture this beauty with
the dark and mysterious details given.
